学习交流主题:The efficacy of China’s war on air pollution in addressing the double burden of malnutrition among children

交流内容简介:Air pollution significantly contributes to the prevalence of childhood double burden of malnutrition (DBM). By implementing the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCAP), China has emerged as the first developing country worldwide to regulate PM2.5 emissions rigorously. However, there is still a lack of understanding regarding the reduced risk of DBM associated with decreased air pollution linked to APPCAP. This study uses panel data from Chinese 2759 counties over 2005 to 2018 and the difference-in-differences method to empirically investigate the previously unexplored causal association between APPCAP and DBM. The results show that APPCAP has a substantial and adverse impact on the risks associated with childhood wasting and overweight due to air pollution. The APPCAP exhibits a more robust protective effect against DBM in northern regions, resource-based cities, areas with high pollution levels, and regions with stringent environmental regulations, particularly favoring females over males. APPCAP not only influences the prevalence of childhood DBM in the pilot counties but also yields positive spillover effects on children’s health in nearby regions, yet the scope could be constrained by a 100-kilometer geographical radius surrounding the pilot sites. The study provides decision-making references for China and other developing countries in formulating similarly stringent environmental policies to mitigate childhood DBM.
